Adelaide were furious that Carlton had tried to add in the Crows' future second round draft pick to the deal at the last minute as papers were close to being filed at AFL house.

The Blues argue the Crows' future second round pick was always part of the deal.

The trade talks for the South Australian, who requested a trade to the Crows in last year's trade period, began on Tuesday night when Carlton made contact with Adelaide and asked if they were once more interested to talk on Gibbs.

The clubs met on Wednesday and thrashed out a deal that was to involve two first round picks from Adelaide - there was uncertainty if that was 10 and 16 this year or a first this year and a first in next year's draft - for Gibbs and the Blues' future second round pick.

The approach came after the Blues struck difficulties finding a suitable trade for Matthew Kennedy from the Giants for a second round pick. That problem was further compounded by Geelong midfielder Darcy Lang nominating the Blues as his preferred destination.

Carlton wanted the extra future second round pick from Adelaide to pass on to the Giants for Kennedy. It is doubtful however that the Giants would accept that pick as they wanted a selection in the 20s for Kennedy.

Carlton will seek to secure Lang for pick 40.

Carlton were also eager to secure more future second round draft picks back in an exchange as they have three potential father-son selections available to them next year at least one of which could emerge as requiring the points from a second round pick.

The Brisbane Lions remain hopeful of securing Charlie Cameron if Gibbs makes his way to the Crows but those connected to Cameron held fears a deal for the contracted 23-year-old would not get done inside the deadline.

Like the Gibbs deal the negotiations between the Eagles and Western Bulldogs over a draft pick exchange that would have helped facilitate Jake Stringer's move to Essendon also fell over.

West Coast lost patience with the Bulldogs' attempt to engineer a complicated pick swap reported in The Age on Tuesday that would have paved the way for the 23-year-old to join the Bombers.

Essendon have picks 25 and 30 and are not only unwilling but are unable under AFL rules to offer a future pick for Stringer as they have already traded out a future second round pick to Gold Coast's Adam Saad.

The stand-off between the Western Bulldogs and the Bombers is likely to continue until close to the 2pm deadline with the Bulldogs wanting to extract a first round pick for Stringer.

Fremantle have told Gold Coast they will not budge on their demand for selection two in exchange for the Suns' Lachie Weller, a stance their own player says is "pretty silly".

Weller's position would suggest the Dockers face the real risk of losing the player for nothing to the Suns through the pre-season draft next year when he comes out of contract.

The Dockers argue the Suns will gain a 200-game player in Weller who is a contracted player and so want the Suns' pick two in the draft. The Suns had hoped to tie Brandon Matera into the Weller deal.

The Dockers are also trying to recruit contracted Giant Nathan Wilson for a future second round draft pick.

Gold Coast agreed in principle to trade picks in return for Gary Ablett after meeting with Geelong. However, the Cats will not trade out picks 19 and 22 for the veteran.

The Suns had to accept the Cats could not provide a player in return for Ablett after Lang chose Carlton ahead of them.

In better news for the Suns, they traded in little known Crows midfielder Harrison Wigg and are expected to land Port's Aaron Young for a late future pick before the 2pm deadline.

Fremantle traded Harley Balic to Melbourne for pick 66 with the 20-year-old determined to return to Victoria after two injury-interrupted years at the Dockers.
