And with Brazill - a wing defence in netball - having recently missed selection in the Diamonds squad, the Magpies, the football ones that is, could pounce.

"We didn't even really know until late today what we were going to do in that space," Collingwood's AFLW football operations manager Mathew James said. "There's a fair bit to work through. We've been working really closely with netball here."

Because of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, the second Super Netball season doesn't start until late April, meaning James is banking on Brazill being available for the full AFLW season.

"Once she wasn't selected for the Diamonds we got a phone call from Ash, expressing her interest in looking at the possibility to play both," James said.

"Ash has always expressed a want and a desire to play AFL."

James said the Pies' netball and women's football departments had worked together to make Brazill's dual-code dream a reality.

"We wanted to make sure everyone was on the same page," he said.

"If we had one party that said it was going to be a bit too hard, it wouldn't have happened."

The situation brings a different challenge, but according to James, it's far from insurmountable.

"The first thing we've got to manage is her workload, monitor that," James said. "We've got a really good team, in terms of our high-performance teams in both programs. The onus will go back onto her to let us know how she's feeling, where fatigue sets in.

"She won't miss too many training sessions. She really shouldn't miss any training sessions with us. She just might be on a modified program," he added.

"Clearly her conditioning is right up there. There's a little bit of endurance stuff that we'll need to work through."

Brazill was one of several players from other sports who joined the growing list of converts to AFLW on Wednesday.

At the pointy end of the draft there was Monique Conti, the Melbourne Boomers basketballer who was taken by the Western Bulldogs with pick four.

With the next selection, Greater Western Sydney drafted Jodie Hicks, a cricketer who won the Women's Big Bash League with the Sydney Sixers last summer.

Tegan Cunningham - taken by Melbourne - is another to have played with the WNBL's Boomers, while the Dogs took former Australian international representative road cyclist Emma Mackie, Adelaide secured Marijana Rajcic, who has captained Adelaide United in the W-League, Fremantle drafted former Perth Glory goalkeeper Evangeline Gooch, and the Pies picked up former Australian junior motorcycling champion Iilish Ross.

Collingwood also added Kristy Stratton - sister of Australian Olympic long jumper Brooke Stratton. Jessy Keeffe - the sister of delisted AFL Magpie Lachie - joined the Brisbane Lions, as did Sophie Conway, whose brother Isaac was once on the Lions' books.

Meanwhile, Jessica Allan, taken by Adelaide at pick eight, is the sister of Crow Sarah.
