Glencore’s North Queensland Copper Assets’ chief operating officer is currently overseas but said indirectly through the company that he has stepped up for the Movember cause.
North West Queensland Prostate Cancer Association’s vice-president Tony McGrady confirmed Mr O’Neill’s involvement in the cause. He welcomed as many men in the community as possible to volunteer for the cause.
He said more awareness of prostate cancer was essential in Mount Isa and in general.
“Women are more than happy to talk about breast cancer because everyone knows someone that has breast cancer and it’s quite a common discussion,” Mr McGrady said.
“But men, when you talk to men about it they are reluctant. I think they think they no longer can function as a man which I understand is not the case.
“The more people who talk about it the more chances we have of people going to the doctor.”
The launch of the Mount Isa Movember will be held at a breakfast at the Irish Club on Sunday October 29, starting 10am. The proceeds will be shared between the North West Breast Cancer Support Group and the North West Qld Prostate Cancer Association.
Anybody interested in becoming involved in Movember to help raise funds can contact Mr McGrady on 0409 967 706.
