Mayor Joyce McCulloch presented Bill with a Sports Encouragement Bursary from the North Queensland Sports Foundation.
Cr McCulloch said the bursary acknowledged sporting achievements and helps promising juniors to pursue their goals by providing financial assistance.
“It is distributed throughout North Queensland to junior sportsmen and women by the North Queensland Sports Foundation which we, Mount Isa City Council, are a member,” Cr McCulloch said.
“Today I have pleasure in presenting this award to Bill Woodward, Bill was nominated for his sporting commitment to BMX.”
The Mayor read out Bill’s citation which said Bill attended the 2017 BMX world championships in Rock Hill, Carolina, USA (with older brother Philip) and he attended the Queensland state titles in September this year and he hopes to attend the Australian national titles next year.
“Bill was awarded the Far North Queensland junior male rider of the year in 2017,” the Mayor said.

To loud applause from a big public gallery at the meeting, Bill received a NQSF embroidered sports jacket, presented by the Mount Isa City councillor for sport Peta MacRae, along with a cheque for $650 to go towards his sports development.
The Mayor then conducted a Q&A with Bill, calling him a “unique young man” and asking him what he was going to spend the bursary on.
“Going to the world championships,” he replied, without skipping a beat.
The Mayor suggested local businesses should sponsor him as a “great return on investment” and she asked him what he thought of America.
“US people are different,” he said.
“Aussies are a lot better!”
Cr McCulloch also praised Bill’s parents and his sporting club.
“Without the support of mum and dad it’s a very difficult journey to have, and without the support of the (Island) BMX Club it’s even more difficult,” she said.
“You should be very proud of your achievements.”
