The deluge has added a much-needed 3?? months' supply, or 86,000 million litres to the region's drinking water.

The combined storage levels of Grid 12 - the 12 dams that make up nearly 90 per cent of south-east Queensland's water supply - increased by 4 per cent to 75 per cent.

Water Supply Minister Mark Bailey said the increase in water supply had delayed the need to implement the region's drought readiness phase, which was triggered when the dams hit 70 per cent.

"This has been a good boost to our dams ahead of summer, but we will need further rainfall to get our drinking water dams back to 100 per cent capacity," he said.

"The rainfall has certainly filled rainwater tanks and given gardens and lawns a much-needed drenching, which should allow all of us to reduce our outdoor water use over the next couple of weeks."

But Mr Bailey warned it was still important for residents to be water-wise, particularly on the Sunshine Coast.

"While the Sunshine Coast's largest dam, Lake Baroon, received its second-largest increase in two years, it was still just above 60 per cent capacity," he said.

Seqwater will continue to operate the water grid to supplement the Sunshine Coast supply from Brisbane and take the pressure off Lake Baroon.

Mr Bailey said following the record dry winter and hot start to spring, most of the initial rain was needed to saturate the ground before inflows started into dams.

The region's largest dams received a boost in supply - Wivenhoe increased by 2 per cent, Somerset increased by 6 per cent and North Pine increased by 5 per cent.

Across the region, eight dams were spilling, with another seven recording water levels about 90 per cent.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast more showers at the weekend, which should result in inflows into the region's drinking water continuing into next week.
