But there's more substance to the claim this time around with Australia's most highly credentialled athletes from the 50-strong contingent targeting a record medal haul in South Korea.

For starters, the Australian group includes two reigning world champions in 22-year-old moguls skier Britt Cox and snowboarding halfpipe superstar Scotty James.

Australian athletes have collected a total of 40 world cup and world championship medals during the past 12 months.

"This is, on paper, probably the most highly credentialled team that we're sending to a Winter Olympic Games so it's really exciting to head to South Korea with the depth we have," Cox said.

"I'm really proud of this team and what the winter team were able to do last year on the world cup circuit. It's exciting and we all hope that we can do Australia proud."

Cox, who returned to Australia from training in Switzerland earlier this week before soon heading back overseas, is preparing for her third Winter Games after debuting in Vancouver aged only 15.

"I went into Sochi [in 2014] as a bit more of a seasoned competitor and going into these Games is a different position as well, I'm going in as world No.1 and as world champion, so I definitely have a huge target on my back," Cox said.

"When people ask me if that makes me nervous or if that's placed a lot of pressure on me, I just think 'What other position would I want to be in?' This is exactly where I want to be."

Australia won two golds at Vancouver eight years ago, equalling Salt Lake City in 2002, but didn't make it to the top of the podium in Sochi four years later, taking home three minor medals.

One of those was a silver to veteran David Morris, who was runner-up in the aerial skiing and became Australia's first male aerial medallist.

The 33-year-old heads to South Korea with a recently acquired world championship bronze medal and said he's never been surrounded by such a depth of talent.

"I do honestly believe this is the strongest team we could possibly have, I expect some impressive results," Morris said.

"They have said it every time, but each time we learn a bit more, we add a few more people, people get Olympic experience, so we have a lot of athletes where it won't be their first one.

"In the last two years we've got some impressive results. We've just continued a whole medal tally throughout the season and it hasn't happened like that for a long time.

"Anything can happen in the Winter Games but our team's been very consistent of late. Being an underdog country, people don't expect us to do well and we take advantage of that."
