He turned up at Stirling Oval to play alongside his cousin Robbie Trickett at Weston Creek Molonglo, and now they're preparing to play in a grand final together.

Evans and Trickett will back up from Weston Creek Molonglo's one-day Gallop Cup match against Ginninderra at Kippax Enclosed Oval, in the Regional Twenty20 Cup decider against Wests-UC at Manuka Oval on Sunday.

Playing a grand final at Manuka Oval together is a far cry from running amok against each other in the backyard at family lunch on Christmas day.

"Backyard cricket - all kinds of sports, backyard cricket, footy, it's what we do as a family," Evans said.

Evans and Trickett are always on separate teams too, trying everything they can to get one up on each other - rarely do they even have a serious conversation.

"Even in my first grade debut when he presented me with my cap he was giving me a bit of stick. It's always in good spirits," Evans said.

"That's why I went to Creek, I'd at least know someone who plays first grade. I'd feel a bit more comfortable there."

For now Evans is keen to knock over his final assignments and exams at Marist College with an eye on studying psychology or medical science at university next year.

Balancing a hectic school timetable and a first grade cricket cap has kept the 18-year-old on his toes as the busiest time of the school year rolls around.

But he'll be chipping away in the nets and on the cricket pitch every time he gets a chance and the teenager is still hoping he can break into the top flight.

Weston Creek Molonglo stalwarts John Rogers, Jono Dean and Blake Dean have all tasted domestic cricket in the past, while former clubman Mac Wright is plying his trade in Tasmania.

"There's a couple of blokes in the Creek team that have obviously played a lot of domestic cricket. I'd like to one day be at their level, it seems like it would be a great future," Evans said.

"It's really good [playing alongside them]. They're always so calm under pressure and they've experienced everything that I've experienced.

"They know what to do if I'm a bit frazzled or under the pump. They just calm me down and encourage me, they know what to do."

So they'll be able to help if Evans gets a bit flustered during his maiden grand final appearance under Manuka's "diamonds in the sky".

While the experienced heads might be a calming influence, Evans laughs Trickett will just be "getting into" him and providing the odd slap on the back.

"I'll definitely be nervous but I'll be excited," Evans said.

"I've played at Manuka once before but that was with school cricket, it's going to be a new experience under lights. Definitely nervous, but a mix of that with excitement."
