It was an unlikely Caulfield Cup victory for Boom Time but they are often the best.

Hall of Fame trainer David Hayes had been here before with Fraar and Tawqueet, but this time he owned the champion and shared in the training with son Ben and nephew Tom Dabernig.

"It is probably my best moment in racing," Hayes said. "You don't own a Caulfield Cup winner every day.

"To share it with Ben - he was quite emotional after the race - was incredible."

Boom Time, a $51 outsider, was bought by Hayes when his breeder Kim Loxton had to sell his racing assets early this year. He had experienced tendon issues in his career but Hayes saw something in the horse.

As he did in 28-year-old jockey Cory Parish. The unsung hoop rides work at Lindsay Park five days a week and does what he is told.

For him, this was also a dream result.

He was supposed to be in Sydney on Saturday, until a last-minute decision to roll the dice and have a shot at the Caulfield Cup with Boom Time earlier in the week meant he stayed in Melbourne.

"It is five years today that I arrived in Seymour from New Zealand and I'm still there," Parish said. "I can't believe I have won the Caulfield Cup. I was going to Sydney until they said he's got a start and you're riding him.

"I just do what I'm told by the team and it was great to repay them with that win.

"It's just been phenomenal. This horse went super last start in the Herbert Power [Stakes], he was the only horse to finish off. I thought if he could relax today he would do it and he did just that.

"It's an amazing thrill. I can't believe ny first group 1 is the Caulfield Cup."

It was a copybook ride on a day where it was an advantage to be on-speed.

Boom Time was perfectly positioned by Parish in sixth place on the rail as runaway leader Sir Isaac Newton opened up a big gap in the middle stages.

By the turn the leader had dropped off and Single Gaze, which had led the chase, took the front. For a moment Canberra trainer Nick Olive thought Single Gaze had pinched it but he would have to settle for second.

"At the top of the straight I thought we had it because she was going so strongly," Olive said. "She has run out of her skin and it is my best proudest moment."

But when Parish took Boom Time to Single Gaze's inside and let him have his head, he sprinted away to win by 1-/4 lengths with favourite Johannes Vermeer a head back in the third.

"What a great horse, tough and backed up off that gut-buster last week and I think that probably won him the race, the good hard run under his belt," Hayes said. "I put him in thinking he would run in the first half of the field and he did everything right.

"What ride from Cory. He rides a lot of trackwork for us and misses out on a lot of good Saturday rides. When I had the ownership of this horse it was a pleasure to put him on and reward him for all his hard work."

Johannes Vermeer had cut back to the inside and followed Boom Time but got held up on the back of Sir Isaac Newton. He got his head up and closed late to run third.

"I got a fair further back then I expected," Johannes Vermeer's jockey Ben Melham said. "He relaxed well but had a duck and weave in the straight. He went very well."
