A little gang of adorably adoptable pups and dogs was on show for Mount Isa’s public at Sunset Dog Park on Sunday.
PHC brought around 20 of its beautiful, adoptable friends to meet the prospective humans.
President Sue Carsen said the drive resulted in one adoption and a few sign ups for trial adoptions.
“Hopefully we’ll have four adoptions out of this. Even if we get one, that’s better than nothing,” Sue said.
Dogs looking for forever homes wore blue ribbons on their collars.
Sue said things had almost reached crisis point a few weeks ago with the number of dogs coming in.
“At one stage we had 30 puppies about five weeks ago, I was really stressing, but I’ve got it down to about 12.”
“I’ve been working very hard on the internet.”
One dog was flown to Alpurrurulam on a mail plane, and another leaves for Tasmania this week.
Among the 20 dogs at Sunday’s adoption drive were only two younger puppies, aged eight to nine weeks.
Sue said there were a few more puppies around 12 weeks, but mainly older dogs.
It is quite amazing that a small group of volunteers manages to move so many animals, and Sue is always on the look out for foster carers.
“I have lots of contacts in Mount Isa so i’m always keeping my ear to the ground, and the minute anyone mentions they might be thinking of a puppy or a dog, I’m usually, ‘Hello! Puppy Central!’,” Sue laughed.
“Anyone looking for a dog, if we don’t have what they want I will put them in ‘the book’.
“Say you want a staffy cross, the minute a staffy cross comes in I give them a ring.”
Smaller breeds are proving popular now, with ‘a bit of a queue’ for little dogs.
“We got one out of the pound last week and she was gone before we had even put her up on Facebook,” Sue said.
“I am very industrious with them because I know if we don’t get them home by a certain time, it gets harder and harder."
Sue said PHC works with Pet Rescue, but people usually lose interest when they see how far they have to travel.
“We have our dogs up there as soon as we can. We get a lot of inquiries, and as soon as we say Mount Isa they aren’t interested because they can’t come and meet the dog.”
