The latest data from the 2016 census, which followed the first release in June, showed Queensland was the top destination for internal migration across Australia, with 220,000 people moving there from 2011 to 2016.

The Sunshine State was the most common destination for people leaving New South Wales and the Northern Territory.

In the 12 months leading up to census night, 144,000 people said they had moved to Queensland from interstate and overseas.

Of those, 54 per cent moved from interstate, in contrast to states such as NSW and Victoria, where the majority moved from overseas.

Across Queensland, 19.2 per cent of people said they lived at a different address 12 months earlier. That number rose to 47.8 per cent five years earlier.

In the Greater Brisbane area, people were most likely to work at in hospitals (4.4 per cent), primary education (2.4 per cent), cafes and restaurants (2.3 per cent), state government administration (2.3 per cent) and supermarket and grocery stores (2.3 per cent).

There were 2.13 million Queenslanders employed in 2016 - 1.3 million of whom were full time while 691,751 were part time.

Men were more likely than women to be overworked in their job in the Greater Brisbane area.

Of those who said they worked 49 hours or more, 73 per cent were men.

Across both genders, the industries most likely to work excessive hours were construction; professional, scientific and technical services; education and training; and transport, postal and warehousing.

But women still tended to bear the brunt of household chores.

The education and training sector had the fastest-growing workforce of any industry in Queensland, growing almost 19 per cent from 2011.

It rose from the fifth to the third largest overall labour force since the last census.

But census program manager Bindi Kindermann said the largest industry was still health care and social assistance, which covered aged care, child care and the health sector.

"This grew by 14 per cent from 2011 to 2016 and was the largest employing industry in the census nationwide," she said.

The third biggest field of study in Queensland, society and culture, was also the fastest-growing over the past five years, with the number of people with qualifications in the area rising 33 per cent.
