Cr Campbell called for three shows of hands to support motions on electricity prices, hospital upgrades and a more equitable return on royalties to the region.

“While we’ve got the community together I thought it would be a great opportunity to let the state government know (our issues),” Cr Campbell.

The Mayor said electricity prices had doubled in recent years and they paid the same as what Townsville or Mackay but it was much hotter there.

“Let’s send a message for a fair go for Cloncurry,” he said.

The second show of hands was about Cloncurry Hospital.

“The main part of the hospital is starting to look a bit tired,” he said.

“It’s 60 years old and they’ve got some upgrades but you can tell the difference between the main facility and the new aged care facility.

“It’s about time Cloncurry got a major upgrade to the hospital.”

The third show of hands was about equitable treatment on royalties.

“Over the past 10 years Cloncurry Shire has given over billion dollars to the state and we’ve got $30m back in the same time,” he said.

“That’s about three percent, which is what every area gets regardless of where they are, but for Cloncurry it should be more like $100 million.”

All three shows of hands received unanimous support from about 80 locals present.

The session also covered off recent achievements and funding initiative such as money to upgrade the sewerage treatment plant, while there were several questions from the floor about dogs such as providing an off-leash area, stray dogs and stopping them from barking during the night.
