The Bureau of Meteorology picked up the storm cells on the radar about 7pm, near Mudgeeraba, Greenbank and Little Nerang Dam after earlier storms reportedly dumped pea-sized hail.

They were heading east or north-east, expected to hit Coolangatta, Logan City and Dayboro by 7pm and Cleveland, Narangba and Burpengary by 8pm.

Storms are developing throughout south-east Queensland, with reports of small hail and predictions of more to come.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for a range of suburbs north of Brisbane shortly after 5pm, warning of likely damaging winds and large hailstones.

About 12.30pm, the Bureau of Meteorology warned of the possibility of severe thunderstorms for a large chunk of Queensland, stretching from the border, inland to Toowoomba and north to areas west of Bundaberg.

By 4.30pm, BoM senior forecaster Michelle Berry said there were several storms throughout the south-east, including one at Marburg, near Ipswich, which had reportedly dropped pea-sized hail.

That storm cell was heading toward Wivenhoe, while other cells were dumping small amounts of rain, less than 10 millimetres, near Nanango, Somerset Dam and on Wide Bay.

And by 5.05pm a severe cell had built up near Fernvale and Mount Nebo, heading north-east and expected to hit the Narangba and Burpengary area about 6pm.

Ms Berry said the weather, driven by a series of upper-level troughs and a surface trough, would likely continue heading east, likely crossing the coast.

Some of the cells could intensify into severe thunderstorms, possibly likely to cross the coast near Brisbane sometime after 6pm and a little later on the Gold and Sunshine coasts.

"It'll continue through the evening hours," Ms Berry said of the weather pattern.

"It's more likely early this evening than late.

"There's some slight potential for overnight activity but really we're expecting mostly through earlier this evening and then again from late tomorrow morning."
