Tim Heiner, 50, and his son, Lachlan, 20, are experienced hikers but could not escape from Mount Barney National Park before storms tore through the bushland on Sunday night, prompting a family member to raise the alarm.
A police spokesman said the missing men contacted emergency services by phone about midday on Monday, which led to them being airlifted off the mountain by 2.30pm.
Mr Heiner told Nine News he "misjudged how long it would take" for him and his son to cover the planned distance and said they would not be going on another trek anytime soon.
An air-and-land search was launched late on Sunday, after the pair set-off the previous day, and rescuers found their vehicle in the Cleared Ridge car park before wild weather interrupted plans.
The search covered the bushland surrounding the mountain in the Scenic Rim and involved the Rescue 500 helicopter, police and SES personnel.
