Abortion is the only medical procedure to feature in the Queensland Criminal Code. It has been there since 1899, but has been amended over the decades.

But following the Queensland election, the new Parliament will be required to deal with proposed legislation to change the law on abortion.

Earlier this year, the Palaszczuk government asked the Law Reform Commission to investigate the issue of modernising the state's laws relating to the termination of pregnancy, with its final report due by June 30, 2018.

The Commission will be required to prepare draft legislation based on its recommendations.

Women's campaigning group Fair Agenda has surveyed Queensland candidates, with 103 signing up to its "pro-choice pledge" so far, committing to "vote to remove abortion from the Criminal Code and support laws to ensure all Queenslanders can safely and legally access full reproductive healthcare, without being harassed or intimidated".

Among those was the LNP's candidate for Traegar, Ron Bird.

Not a verbose man, Mr Bird simply said: "It's a woman's right to do with her body."

"I've seen over the years the pain it's created," he said.

Mr Bird said he had not canvassed voters in the vast electorate, which covers Mount Isa, Cloncurry, Charters Towers and Doomadgee, and his position was his own personal opinion.

An LNP spokesman said there were no planned changes to the current policy.

In February 2017, independent member for Cairns Rob Pyne withdrew his two abortion bills, which was what prompted the government to refer the issue to the Commission.

In February, Attorney-General Yvette D'Ath referred the issue to the Law Reform Commission and said Labor, which promised its MPs a conscience vote, would introduce a bill in the next term of government.

The LNP had confirmed it would not support either of Mr Pyne's bills, despite allowing a conscience vote, meaning they were doomed to fail.

In February, Deputy Premier Jackie Trad said the government would consider any recommendations from the Commission and "seek to bring back a bill in order to modernise Queensland's abortion laws".

This week, Greens candidate for South Brisbane Amy MacMahon said, if elected, she would introduce a bill to decriminalise abortion within the first 100 days.

"We would pay close attention to the Law Reform Commission's recommendations when they arrive, but it can't be used as an excuse to delay any longer," she said.

Ms MacMahon said abortion should be legal, public and free. The overwhelming majority of terminations were currently performed in private clinics.

Katter's Australian Party MP Robbie Katter, who will be contesting Traeger, said he was strongly opposed to any changes to abortion in the Criminal Code.

"It's an issue that I'd stand behind in an election and I want people to take notice of because that's a value I hold very dearly," he said.

"I don't have it in my DNA to be able to tolerate any sort of moves in that direction.

"I'd rather be voted out of office, rather than change my view on that."

One Nation state leader Steve Dickson said the party would not be supporting any changes.

"There's no bill on the table, but we like things the way they are, and leaving things the way they are," Mr Dickson said.

With the Queensland election to be held on November 25, Fair Agenda executive director Renee Carr said the pledge would help pro-choice voters understand how their candidate would represent them on the issue.

"It's great to see this many candidates have already pledged that they will stand up for Queenslanders to have the dignity of control over their body and future," she said.

Fair Agenda sent its pledge question to all sitting MPs and Labor, LNP, Greens and One Nation candidates who were announced as at October 27, with more responses arriving.

Of those who took the pledge, there were 19 Labor candidates or MPs, one LNP, 81 Greens, one Socialist Alliance and one independent - Mr Pyne.
