Boxers from the age of 12 to 40 will fight against competitors from all over the country for the annual Red Desert Dust Up on December 9.
PCYC boxing coach, James Derrick, said the boxers had been training all year competing at monthly or bi-monthly competitions around the state.
“We have travelled to Cloncurry, Cairns, Edmonton, Bowen, Innisfail and had a few held in Mount Isa,” Mr Derrick said.
“We have a weekly time on Fridays where all the boxers will come in and go through their training.
“With the competition coming up next month we have been working on technique whilst keeping fit.
“We have been doing plenty of sparing to refine their skills.”
Mr Derrick said boxing was not like any other sport.
“Boxing is a thinking game and you’re in the ring by yourself, it’s not like a team sport where you can rely on your team mate beside you.
“It is an individual game, so how much you put into your training is how much you’ll get out of it.”
Competing in their first fight will be Shannay Stringer, 14, and Kyeisha Derrick, 12.
“I have always enjoyed contact sports so I thought it would be great to try boxing,” Shannay said.
“I am looking forward to learning more and improving my skills before the fight next month and I am excited to go away and compete against some other boxers.”
Kyeisha was brought up in a boxing family and said it was a great opportunity to give it a go.
“I enjoy getting in the ring and having a spar and my hard training schedule helps me keep fit which benefits not only my boxing but also other sports I participate in.
“I am excited, a little nervous but I am looking forward to competing against some other people.”
