Soccer Mount Isa is opening up a women’s social side in 2018, to encourage more female players to give the world’s game a go.
President, Jason Howard, said the idea came about as numbers started to dwindle in the regular competition.
“A lot of women say they are interested, but don’t want to play the full game straight up,” Howard said.
“This will be five or six a side, playing 20 minute halves, and it will run for 10 weeks over the cooler months.”
The social comp will be open to any woman who wants to play, regardless of her experience level.
“We are trying to get people who have never played before. Some may feel intimidated because they see the big girls who have been playing it for years, but it’s really just about getting more women into football.”
“If they like playing it, they might even consider playing a full game,” Howard said.

“If we can get enough players for four teams it’d be great,” Howard said.
“Anyone can give it a go – teachers, nurses, government employees, or just a casual work team.
“Apart from netball, hockey, and touch, there aren’t a lot of sports for women here. Football Queensland and Football Australia are really trying to push the women’s side right now, too.”
There are currently five teams in the women’s side; four from Mount Isa and one from Cloncurry.
Mount Isa soccer games take place on the soccer field at the end of Sports Parade.
