Mayor Joyce McCulloch was on hand to celebrate the official opening of Santa’s mailbox, and assisted three-year-old Vivienne Moore with the safe delivery of her letter.
“Vivienne asked Santa for a tee-pee, but not just any tee-pee – a well lit up tee-pee,” Cr McCulloch said.
“Santa loves to hear from children in Mount Isa, and about how good they have been all year.
“I think the mailbox brings Santa closer to home, and it engages them with the meaning of Christmas and the act of giving.
“The ladies at the Mount Isa City Library do such a great job for the community and this is just an added asset to the library. It is great initiative to bring children to the library to help them understand what a library is and how it benefits them and their learning.”
Santa’s Mailbox has been installed at the Mount Isa Library for seven years, and every year there are hundreds of letters posted by the city’s children, with each one reaching the North Pole in time for Christmas.
Santa’s Mailbox will be available at the Mount Isa City Library until Saturday December 9, and each letter needs to include clearly written names, age and return address so that Santa’s replies arrive at the right house.
