Mount Isa Airport Chief Operating Officer Kevin Gill said the Community Benefit Fund had run for the past two years, allowing the airport to provide funding support to a significant number of local community groups at a grassroots level.
“We’re acutely aware of the uphill battle faced by many of these groups when it comes to funding,” he said.
“The initiatives are fantastic – they have a significant impact on the local community, reaching schools, interest groups and sports teams.”
Mr Gill said the grants were typically based on $1000 per initiative.
“It has been great to see just how far this money has gone,” he said.
“In selecting grant recipients, we endeavoured to select initiatives across a range of categories including education, arts and culture, and health and wellbeing.”
Healy State School will have its own superhero mascot thanks to funding support from the Community Benefit Fund.
“The concept of our mascot came about as our school has a strong focus on attendance and positive behavior and we decided a 'superhero' type mascot places importance on these characteristics,” said Healy State School P&C President Megan Crowther.
“Our Healy superhero mascot will be named by our children and will be the driving force for major events in the school and broader community such as NAIDOC celebrations, Under 8s days, playgroups and other community events.”
The Community Benefit Fund is run by Mount Isa Airport’s parent company, Queensland Airports Limited which also operates Gold Coast, Townsville and Longreach airports.
The 2017 Community Benefit Fund contributed close to $50,000 to 44 organisations in the four regions.
QAL said they would launch the 2018 Community Benefit Fund early next year.
