It was feared Hunter Cup winner Bling It On would never race again after he suffered horrific knee injuries in a June race fall but he is set to enjoy the best of both worlds after a remarkable return to the track at Menangle on Saturday night.

The seven-year-old returned five months after a fall at Albion Park, which left him fighting for life, to run the fastest mile of his career. His racing career is now set to be combined with duties as a stallion, which he did right up until raceday.

"He might be even better than before," driver Luke McCarthy said. "If you saw him after Albion Park you would have said, 'you poor bugger', but he is just a great healer.

"We decided to give him his chance at racing again because he loves it, but I wasn't expecting that. It was just amazing. He has still got stud duties and he actually served mares last week and served one on Friday."

Bling It On has taken to his role as a stallion well, serving around 100 mares already, but his miraculous recovery made a racing return possible.

McCarthy is thinking of a Miracle Mile after his charge went a 1.50.8 mile in his return. It is not something he thought possible after Bling It On opened up his knees so badly that the tendons and bones were visible in the Albion Park fall.

In fact, a stud career was even in doubt because of the high risk of infection from injury caused by sliding along the track.

"It was one of those injuries where he needed time and luck," McCarthy said. "It was like a really deep gravel rash, you could see the tendons. He had to be sewn up and hope there was no infection.

"Any infection and he was done. We decided to stand him at stud and nurse him back to health. If he didn't get to race again he had done enough on the track.

"He has stud duties until January but if he can do that on the track, you would like to think we could take on the good ones in a Miracle Mile."

In a sad postscript to Bling It On's recovery and victory, his mother Alldatglittersisgold lost a sister to him at birth on Saturday.
