Analysis by Fairfax Media has found 142 out of a total 449 candidates (or 31.6 per cent) are women.

At 44 per cent, the Greens had the most balanced field of candidates, with 41 women and 52 men.

Almost 40 per cent of Labor's candidates were women (37 out of 93 candidates) and there were 26 women in the LNP's mix of 93 representatives - a total of 28 per cent.

"I think it's only really been in the last decade that we've seen a radical shift away from an overwhelming male-dominated Parliament and political landscape at election times," he said.

"But I think it perhaps does speak to what has been a greater regional focus in this particular election.

"I suppose the very obvious and oft talked-about rise of parties especially on the right, like One Nation, which have tended to and I believe have again fielded overwhelmingly male candidates."

Just 18 per cent of Pauline Hanson's One Nation candidates were women, and Katter's Australian Party and the Civil Liberties, Consumer Rights, No Tolls party had one woman each.

It was not just political parties with fewer women: only 27 per cent of independent candidates were women.

"To stand as an independent at an election is a big ask ... and often it's a case of being the loudest - most attention-seeking might be one descriptor - and that hasn't historically tended to be the style of women that have stood for office," he said.

Given the high percentage of men running in the state election, it was hardly surprising to find there were 20 seats with only male candidates on the ballot.

The mostly regional male-only seats included Cairns, Maryborough, Murrumba and Thuringowa.

In contrast, there were a handful of seats with a female majority, including Bulimba, Gympie, Macalister and Townsville.

"Perhaps regionally it's where there is an inherent conservatism, or just still a legacy of considering politics as still a boys club," Dr Salisbury said.

"Some of the advances and changes we've made to our parliamentary system in the last decade or so have been conducive to attracting more women to stand for office and have worked in the favour of a better functioning Parliament," Dr Salisbury said.

"Processes like the committee system where the Parliament is more deliberative ... and isn't so overtly combative and is more consultative.

"It's more attractive to anybody, it's a better way of operating a Parliament - at least a unicameral Parliament that doesn't have an upper house to process legislation."
