Josh and Nicole Chapman were one of the few lucky couples to experience a home birth – although this was not planned.
At 38 weeks gestation around 10.30pm, Nicole had put her three children to bed before she begun experiencing minor, sharp pains in her lower abdomen.
Having experienced similar pains in the few weeks prior and a husband on night-shift, Nicole didn’t want to alarm Josh in case it was a false alarm.
At 2.30am the pain intensified and Nicole called her husband to inform him of the strong contractions.
“I called the maternity ward at the Mount Isa Hospital and they said my contractions were not too close together, if they got worse call back.
“I thought ok, I still have plenty of time for Josh to get home, to organise a baby sitter for the kids and get to the hospital. But that was not the case.”
Ten minutes later the contractions intensified more and Nicole called the ambulance to assist her.
“I was bent over the kitchen bench and I could feel my body pushing the baby out,” Nicole said.
“The paramedics arrived and helped coach me through my contractions.”
Advance care paramedics Bianca Anderson and Ann Maree Wilkinson were the first on the scene when Nicole went into active labour.
“We were unable to move her as the baby was crowning, so we called our CCP (critical care paramedic), Scott to assist,” Ms Anderson said.
“When Scott and Josh arrived they helped to get Nicole onto the stretcher and after a few pushes the baby was delivered within two minutes.”
Baby Arielle arrived at 4.30am weighing 7 pounds, 12 ounces (3.5kg).
For Ms Anderson and Ms Wilkinson, this was their first delivery.
“The best part was that there was no complications during the labour with either mum or bub,” Ms Wilkinson said.
“It made for a beautiful and rare event. It is one of the perks of our jobs.”
Paramedics transported Nicole and Arielle to the Mount Isa Hospital for observation, where they stayed in hospital for two day before returning home.
