The 25-year-old was overlooked in favour of young star Thanasi Kokkinakis, who will play his first Australian Open since 2015 after a torrid time with injury over the past two years.

Tomic's 2017 has been far from successful, winning just a measly 10 matches and losing 19 on tour, his best result being quarter-final displays at Eastbourne and Istanbul, with his ranking dropping from 26 to 143.

Australian Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt has spoken to Tomic and said the teen prodigy is unsure of his plans this summer.

Tomic has been invited to compete in a 16-man wildcard play-off in Melbourne in December, although he is yet to accept the invitation.

"He's had a tough year and he needs matches and he's got to put himself out there on the line to have a crack at making the Open," said Hewitt.

"We all know the kind of tennis he can play but he has to get back to that level and he also needs to commit to the sport as well and we won't be making any more wildcard decisions until we see what happens in the play-offs."

Speaking on Friday at Melbourne Park, Hewitt confirmed that Tomic's management said that he would enter qualifying for the Brisbane International beginning on December 31.

Tomic completed his season last week in the Bratislava Challenger event in Slovakia, losing in the second round to former world No.14 Jerzy Janowicz in straight sets, but Hewitt says it was a step in the right direction.

Should he fail to progress through the wildcard play-offs, there may still be a chance for the former world No.17 with four wildcard spots remaining for the event, but 18-year-old Alex de Minaur, 20-year-old Akira Santillan and the injury-plagued John Millman, Alex Bolt and James Duckworth are all fighting for spots. This could force Tomic into the gruelling process of qualifying for the tournament.

Also on Friday, Tennis Australia announced a Fight MND concert on January 14, one day before the tournament begins, featuring the likes of Jimmy Barnes and David Crane.

Tournament director Craig Tiley said the cause was very important to the organisers of the event and tennis wanted to get behind the fight as much as it could.

"This is a cause close to the hearts of many of us in the tennis and sporting community, and as such is an extremely important partnership for Tennis Australia," Tiley said.

"MND has taken the lives of some of the great people involved in our sport, notably Brad Drewett, Angie Cunningham, and most recently Peter Doohan.

"All of us in tennis have the desire to support FightMND in their mission to find a cure and support those suffering the disease."
