Labor and the LNP both go into the Queensland election with 41 seats and the need to win six more to govern in their own right.

Labor is polling slightly ahead of the LNP, and a Galaxy poll revealed a tale of two states, with support for Labor higher in the capital, and a backlash in the regions.

Griffith University political expert Paul Williams said he believed Labor would win more seats than it lost, and the LNP would lose more seats than it won on Saturday.

"Labor will go very close to 47 - if it doesn't get 47, then 46, 48," Dr Williams said.

"I think Labor will have a net win and the LNP a net loss.

"You'd want to be [Labor Premier] Annastacia Palaszczuk waking up tomorrow rather than [LNP leader] Tim [Nicholls]."

Dr Williams said it was unlikely Labor would lose seats in the south-east corner, but "you never know".

He did not see the LNP winning a majority and said Mr Nicholls would have to rely on One Nation support if he wanted to form government.

"We know from the polls there is a swing to Labor in the Brisbane metropolitan areas, the two seats in Brisbane [Mansfield and Mount Ommaney] have been made notionally Labor," Dr Williams said.

"But does it add up to 47? That's the big question."

Labor has committed to not doing deals with anyone, while the LNP has pledged no coalition or shared ministry with One Nation, although Mr Nicholls left the door open by saying he would deal with what the voters delivered.

But Dr Williams said he could envisage Ms Palaszczuk forming government with the Katter's Australian Party if required, despite her comments to the contrary.

"She will justify it saying I'm saving Queensland from a One Nation government," he said.

The LNP dominates the Gold Coast, but Labor will have its eyes set on a new seat at the northern end called Bonney, which has a margin of 2.2 per cent.

Dr Williams said the extremely marginal LNP-held seat of Glass House could fall to Labor on One Nation preferences.

A ReachTEL showed Labor's Maiwar candidate Ali King was neck-and-neck with the LNP's Scott Emerson, which could see the seat turn red, although Dr Williams said he believed Mr Emerson could hang on.

However, Dr Williams said Labor's Brittany Lauga could be in trouble in Keppel in central Queensland, and the seat, with a 4.1 per cent margin to Labor, could fall to the LNP.

"One Nation is going to get a decent vote [in Keppel], double digits, but it's a big ask to overtake the LNP - you'd have to be pulling 30 per cent," he said.

One poll put LNP seats such as Callide, which party elder Jeff Seeney will depart upon retirement on Saturday, at risk of falling to One Nation.

Dr Williams said he believed One Nation would not replicate its victory at the 1998 election, when it won 11 seats with 23 per cent of the vote.

"I think it will almost certainly be in single digits, I'd be very surprised if they got fewer than three, and I'd be very surprised if they got more than eight," he said.

Seats such as Hinchinbrook, Mirani and Mulgrave could also be in play for One Nation, Dr Williams said.

Political pundits argue LNP state leader Steve Dickson, who defected from the LNP, would not be able to retain his seat of Buderim on Saturday.

Ms Palaszczuk said she believed Toowoomba North would be a bellwether, arguing if Labor could snag the seat from the LNP, it would win a majority.

More than 3 million Queenslanders have enrolled to vote, with 453 candidates standing in 93 electorates.

On Saturday, voters will descend on 1670 polling booths to decide the trajectory of the state for the next three years.
