Mr Bird said the ALP was able to convince South East voters not to vote LNP in a “panic attack” in a reference to how Labor used the fact that the LNP was preferencing One Nation ahead of Labor.
In Traeger Mr Bird was polling only 8.45% but was confident that would go up in postal and absentee votes.
Mr Bird said he supported calls for a separate North Queensland state and said estimates of how much this would cost were “overblown”.
“If we had a state broder around the Tropic of Capricorn we’d have most of the resources,” Mr Bird said.
Mr Bird said North West Queensland had a habit of voting against the trend of the rest of the state.
“This happened the last time I ran which was in 1995 against Tony McGrady,” he said.
“Labor won the seat but lost the election (after the Mundingburra by-election).”
