The guides came up with the idea of creating an emergency bag containing toiletries and personal items for women who are fleeing violent domestic situations with little or no personal effects.
The girls, aged 10 to 12 years old, decorated the bags with personal messages of strength and support, such as:
“Stay strong, stay brave and stay cool.”
“Stronger than fire.”
“Never stop smiling.”
“I hope you will have a fresh start just like I got.”
“You count, you make a difference, you are loved.”
Acting Sergeant Rowena Hardiker, Domestic and Family Violence Coordinator for the Mount Isa District, accepted the bags on behalf of a Mount Isa Women’s Shelter.
“I would like to acknowledge the Mount Isa Junior Girl Guides for such a noble and relevant gesture to the Mount Isa community, helping the most vulnerable in our community,” Acting Sergeant Hardiker said.
“They have shown maturity and thoughtfulness that is so pleasing to see in children of that age. Well done Mount Isa Girl Guides, for such a thoughtful gesture.”
