Twenty five-year-old, Beck Hodshon, is the first to sign up for the 2018 Queen Quest competition and is eager to start raising awareness and funds for her chosen charity, LifeFlight Rescue Helicopter.
Based in Mount Isa, the LifeFlight Rescue Helicopter is called out across north west Queensland to rescue injured persons in remote areas.
“I have friends and family who have been involved in accidents on farms and the first service that usually shows up is the LifeFlight Rescue Helicopter,” Ms Hodshon said.
“Personally I do a lot of kilometres and travel a lot, whether it be with horses in tow or by myself. So it is peace of mind knowing if something does go wrong they are there to help me out.
“I could not think of a better charity to support.”
Ms Hodshon moved to Mount Isa three years ago and is a qualified fitter at George Fisher Mine. In her spare time she enjoys attending rodeos across North West Queensland competing in barrel racing on her horse Cheques.
Having only recently started on the rodeo circuit, Ms Hodshon said it was a fantastic sport that got the whole family involved.
“I compete in barrel racing and I am also learning to rope so I can compete in breakaway in the near future,” she said.
“Through the Queens Quest competition I want to show people, it doesn’t matter how old you are, you can do it and it is a great sport to participate in.”
Ms Hodshon said she also entered in the Queen Quest competition to challenge herself and develop personal growth.
“Through work, I participate in the Girls in Mining mentor program. I felt entering in the Queen Quest would help me build more knowledge on how to better myself and assist the girls in this program.
“Other parts of the competition that I am most looking forward to is handing over the cheque to my charity at the end of my journey, presenting sashes to place getters at the rodeo and hyping up children through the school visits, the week of rodeo.”
Ms Hodshon is in the process of finalising her fundraising plan but will host events for children and kids at heart, with her first event expected in January 2018.
