Before moving to Gold Coast in 2011, Ablett wore No.29 for Geelong in 192 games over nine seasons.
The two-time Brownlow Medalist wore No.9 in his 110 games with the Suns.
His famous father Gary Ablett senior wore No.5 during his playing days with the Cats but given Nakia Cockatoo currently occupies that jersey, No.4 is the closest Ablett junior could get to it following Andrew Mackie's retirement this year.
Former Essendon and Western Bulldogs forward Stewart Crameri will wear No.36 for Geelong next year after receiving another lifeline in the rookie draft on Monday. It was previously worn by delisted defender Tom Ruggles.
Meanwhile, draftees Tim Kelly (11), Lachie Fogarty (13), Charlie Constable (18) and Gryan Miers (32) were also handed their jumper numbers after they were vacated by Darcy Lang, Tom Lonergan, Josh Cowan and Steven Moltop respectively.
Lang (Carlton) and Motlop (Port Adelaide) joined new clubs in October, Lonergan retired and Cowan was delisted.
