Mount Isa City Council and Glencore will fund an upgrade of Golf Club Road. The private 30-year-old road leading to the 18-hole Mount Isa Golf Club is in poor condition and a challenging drive for local golfers. Glencore and Council will share the $80,000 cost to seal the road with work to commence early new year.

President of the Mount Isa Golf Club Bob Jakeman welcomed the news. “The golf club is a great asset for the town, but at the moment Golf Club Road is so poor that getting to the greens can be a test for man and vehicle,” Mr Jakeman said.
“We’re hopeful that once the road is fixed and properly sealed, more people will want to come out and play our unique outback course and grow our membership.”
Chief Operating Officer for Glencore’s North Queensland Copper business Matt O’Neill said supporting projects to improve regional liveability was one of Glencore’s key community priorities.
“As a residential mining operation, a vibrant, liveable community means we can attract and retain the right people for our business, which helps us remain sustainable,” Mr O’Neill said.
“Improving road access is a simple way we can remove an obstacle for the town, and help the Golf Club rebuild and fulfill its potential as an important piece of recreational infrastructure for Mount Isa.”

Mount Isa Mayor Joyce McCulloch said Council and Glencore would begin work to put bitumin on a three-kilometre section of road in the new year after the wet season.
“This project is a great example of what can be achieved through collaboration and cooperation and I thank Glencore and the Mount Isa Golf Club for their support,” Mayor McCulloch said.
“The Mount Isa Golf Club is one of the most remote 18-hole courses in Australia.
“Bob and the Club’s management team have big plans, including greening the fairways using recycled water from the Council’s nearby effluent treatment plant.
“We’re all confident these upgrades, together with the new road, will help breathe new life in to this great local sport.”
