There is a variety to Brenton Avdulla's good book of rides at Rosehill on Saturday, from a warhorse to the potential of a two-year-old, from a boom sprinter to a last-start group 2 winner.

Avdulla rides Festival Stakes top weight Red Excitement, the horse that went within an ace of finishing Winx's winning run in the Chelmsford Stakes with a bold front-running challenge in September but has since failed to return to that level.

He has been on Red Excitement for three of 13 wins when the eight-year-old was a much younger horse and rode him again last start when trainer Gerald Ryan decided to change tactics.

"I think we will be coming with one run again. He was pretty good the other day and if we had a clear run he would have been a lot closer to the Festival favourite [Cabeza De Vaca]," Avdulla said.

"I rode him a fair bit when I was at Gerald's a couple of years ago and he was always a nice horse and up to this sort of race."

Red Excitement is a $16 chance in the Festival but punters will be willing Avdulla to success elsewhere on the card. He rides well-supported Godolphin two-year-old filly Colombina, and favourites Savapinski in the ATC Cup and Glenall in the Starlight Stakes.

"You have to remember Glenall has only won the two races but there is such a boom on him. He is full of potential but it is a big step up in grade and he will have to execute everything right to be winning," Avdulla said.

He has built a great partnership with Matriarch Stakes winner Savapinski during the spring, going from winning at Wyong and Hawkesbury to a group 2 during the Flemington carnival. In four rides he has three wins and a second in track-record time.

"She gets another challenge on Saturday but the way she won at Flemington, I think the 2000m will be right up her alley again," Avdulla said.

Colombina might challenge Miss Invincible for favouritism in the opening race at Rosehill if the money continues to flow. She has been $5.50 to $4 at Sportsbet for her debut since betting open. And she has only had the one barrier trial where she was third for Avdulla.

"I just got her across heels late and let her work to the line," he said. "There is a fair bit left there for race day."
