"Sometimes Australia is guilty of not having a lot going on ... then there are times when ... we have Bob Katter and the issues with the citizenship saga and then it is an embarrassment of riches," he said.

The British-born Melbourne resident said he didn't often dabble in a lot of political content, especially given it was hard to "ridicule the ridiculous".

"How do you add a twist of silliness ... when the joke has already been made by them," he said.

"They are doing our job for us."

Politics aside, a host of comedy greats will grace our sunny state from February, including Urzila Carlson, Fiona O'Loughlin, Jim Gaffigan and Jimeoin, as well as Green, who will celebrate three decades of being on the comedy circuit with a special show.

"When people said ???I have been doing this job for 30 years' I used to be in awe of that but looking back it is no time at all if you enjoy something," he said.

"The show will be very current, with all the stand-up ideas I have at the moment but making gentle reference to where I have come from because I hope they just might find that interesting."

Also a best-selling author - he penned The A-Z of Living Together, The A-Z of Being Single and The A-Z of having a Baby - Green has also made several TV appearances on Spicks and Specks and The Glass House, and is a regular at the Melbourne Comedy Festival Gala.

He first graced our shores in 1996 and migrated with his wife to Melbourne on Christmas Day in 2008.

He said he loved Australian audiences, especially in Brisbane.

"When you play Brisbane you think ???This material is brilliant, the audience loves it' and then you come to Melbourne and after five minutes you go, ???Can you actually hear me?' " he said.

"Australian audiences like a story ... Brits like gags, they like jokes, they like punchlines. Australian audiences like a narrative, they like a beginning, a middle and an end.

"I think maybe because they are listening to essentially what is a foreigner - they are thinking to themselves, ???What, you have come all this way, what have you come to tell us?' "

While his wife and sons, aged 12 and 9 and affectionately nicknamed Lucifer and Voldemort, tend to be regular fodder for his shows, he said his family had never complained. Except once.

"A rock star will write a song about his wife and everyone says ???Oh, that is lovely', I write a routine about my wife, which comes from the fact I observe her, so my jokes are the love songs to my partner," he said.

"My wife has only ever said one complaint, and she only complained mildly about one routine I did.

"I wrote a routine about vaginal flatulence - I was just trying to find taboos that had never been discussed.

"You are always trying to find something that has not been noticed, so anyway, I found this thing and I wrote this routine and I got big laughs but my wife really did not like that so I dropped it."

He said his sons had recently started coming to his shows.

???I don't know what they get out of it - they don't say anything about it but they complain about everything else so I would have heard it by now," he said.

Green said he had the artwork for his upcoming show changed last month after Louis CK was accused of sexual misconduct.

"The original artwork for my Jeff Green 30 had a Louis CK quote on it and we had to pull the artwork before the show went on sale just because it seemed tone deaf to what was currently happening," he said.

"I was brought up by my mother and four sisters. I came from an all-female world.

"When we started out there was only Jo Brand, Victoria Wood and a couple of other [female] comedians and for like 10 or 15 years it didn't change but I have noticed now we are starting to see, especially down in Melbourne, it is a much more progressive environment.

"Even the language of comedy was very male orientated; ???I killed, I stormed, I nailed it,' it was blokey talk backstage.

"[Now] it is more inclusive - we can't afford to be complacent."

The ninth instalment of Australia's fast-growing comedy festival will bring more than 70 comedians across Brisbane Powerhouse, City Hall and SunPAC and will run from February 23 until March 25, 2018.

The full line-up and program will be available online from Thursday.
