Mount Isa gay man Barry Byrnes has said he is “quite pleased” with the federal parliament passing the same sex marriage bill on Thursday.
“Some people will be quite unhappy and I apologise for that but the will of the majority of the people have spoken,” Mr Byrnes said.
“I’m not a religious person but I’ve always had the philosophy it doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from, everyone deserves regards, respect and love.”
While Mr Byrnes modestly suggested he might be too old to marry, it would be interesting to see if young gay people in Mount Isa might decide to tie the knot.
Only four MPs voted against the bill including Bob Katter. His seat of Kennedy voted 53-47 against in the postal survey.
