The operation includes:
- increased night time patrols (two to three extra cars on the road)
- an additional six to 10 temporary officers (from January 5)
- five new permanent officers (three this week, two in January)
- bringing back the police bike patrol
- deploying the mobile policing unit to crime hotspots
The police service is also working with local organisations and groups to:
- establish a drop in center for at risk youth
- create night patrols run by community groups
- crackdown on truancy, with the Department of Education
Patrol Inspector Chris Hodgman says “we can't arrest our way out of this problem. We need to be proactive with what we do with some of these youth.”
“The most important message is if a crime is happening now, ring Triple Zero.
“PoliceLink is for reporting crimes that occurred previously and is not happening now.”
