Brisbane was relatively unscathed compared to the likes of the Sunshine Coast, Scenic Rim and Lockyer Valley haviung recorded less than a millimetre of rain.

Hailstones four centimetres in size hit the Darling Downs and Lockyer Valley regions on Sunday afternoon as severe storms threatened New Year's Eve celebrations.

A total of 71 millimetres of rain fell in the hour to 2.10pm at Camp Hill Road, about 50 kilometres south-west of Laidley, and four-centimetre hail has been reported near Grantham, about 28 kilometres east of Toowoomba. Three-centimetre hailstones were also reported at Allora, about 60 kilometres south of Toowoomba.

As of 5pm on Sunday, almost 7000 residents were without power on the Sunshine Coast. More than 1800 were cut-off in the Scenic Rim region and more than 800 in the Lockyer Valley were experiencing a blackout.

Closer to Brisbane, Beaudesert recorded 30 millimetres of rain in 90 minutes and Amberley received about 20 millimetres over the same period.

A severe-weather warning remains in place, with storms expected to affect Warwick, Toowoomba, Dalby, Maroochydore, Gympie, Kingaroy, Noosa, Maryborough, Hervey Bay, Fraser Island, Oakey and Caloundra.

The Bureau of Meteorology warned damaging winds, large hail, heavy rainfall and potential flash flooding were likely.

Revellers at Woodford Folk Festival, west of Caboolture, were warned to secure their camps in an emergency alert from the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service.

A storm originally estimated to hit about 4pm could bring destructive winds, heavy rainfall and large hailstones, the message said.

A mass text from the Moreton Bay Regional Council sent many scurrying back to their tents to check on things but most stayed in the festival grounds, ready to dance through the rain.

However, the storms appeared to skirt around the area, instead hitting Kilcoy and Wamuran to the west and east.
