Approval has been given for a landmark building in Brisbane's inner north-east to make way for a high-density development.

The 10-storey Tatts Group office tower at 240 Sandgate Road, Albion dates back to the mid-1970s, but the gaming company lodged a development application with Brisbane City Council in 2014 to change the use of the site.
The application, lodged June 20, proposed changing the use of the site from a light industry / low impact industrial zone to be classified as medium to high-density mixed-use area to allow the construction of multiple dwellings as well as being suitable for office, food and drink outlets and sales space.
The council gave the green light to the change of use application on December 21, 2017.
It is unclear what role the recent $11 billion Tabcorp and Tatts Group merger will play in the development approval.
In 2015 Tatts Group received council approval to build a $100 million 17-storey tower at Newstead as part of its national headquarters, but the company later opted to abandon those plans and move into space in an office tower on Ann Street in Brisbane City.
The merger leaves plans for Tatts Group to move to new office space undetermined.
Tatts Group staff still currently work out of the Albion building.
In the development application submitted to the council, it was proposed a change of use at the 1.1 hectare Sandgate Road site could allow different development opportunities including multiple dwellings towers with up to 600 units or a mixed-use commercial tower of up to 3000 square metres.
In the final plans submitted to the council by Tatts Group on December 12 four buildings of up to 15 storeys and a public plaza were shown.
These plans were indicative only to show the potential of the site.
Now that the change of use approval has been given a new development application would need to be lodged to receive approval for any actual development.
"Tabcorp remains committed to maintaining a significant presence in Brisbane as part of the proposed combination with Tatts," the company said in a statement.
"In line with that commitment, Tabcorp intends to proceed with a move to the 180 Ann Street building.
"In coming months we will be looking at plans for the move."
