Winton had its warmest night on record with a minimum temperature of 33.1 degrees overnight. Meanwhile, Cloncurry equalled its warmest ever night with 32.7 and Longreach had its warmest night since 1902 by dropping to only 31.8, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

BoM forecaster Lauren Murphy said a stagnant air mass over the interior of the state as well as cloud cover trapping the daytime heat were responsible for the record temperatures.

In the south-east, Brisbane recorded an overnight low of 24 degrees, but Cape Moreton and Redlands exceeded 25 degrees during the early hours of Sunday.

However, Gatton, which experienced a maximum temperature of just under 42 degrees on Saturday, dropped to an overnight minimum of 20 degrees.

The record-breaking overnight temperatures came after "fast-moving" severe storms swept across the region on Saturday evening.

Rainfall totals were generally between 10 and 15 millimetres, but Fishermans Pocket near Gympie received 38 millimetres. Sunshine Coast Airport also recorded a wind gust of 85 kilometres per hour.

Ms Murphy said there was the potential for severe storms to return on Sunday, with damaging winds and large hail possible.

"The Sunshine Coast and areas to the north are still in with a storm risk this afternoon and early this evening," she said.

Brisbane was heading for an expected top of 38 degrees on Sunday along with Beaudesert, Gatton, Ipswich and Caboolture.

However, Ms Murphy said once temperatures had peaked, cooler conditions were expected, with a refreshing south-easterly wind change forecast to reach Brisbane during the afternoon and evening.

Looking to next week, top temperatures were forecast to drop down to 29 degrees in Brisbane on Monday and remain in the low 30s for the rest of the week. Overnight temperatures were also expected to drop to between 19 and 21 degrees next week.
