Assistant Commissioner Michael Keating said police did about 62,000 drug tests in 2017.

"In the financial year, we're aiming to do 65,000 tests and next year, in the financial year, we'll graduate that to 75,000 tests," he said.

Police test for cannabis, speed, ice and ecstasy using saliva tests, in operations similar to RBTs.

A first offence carries a penalty of up to $1706, with a licence disqualification for up to three months.

In March 2016, it was reported police had administered 20,000 drug tests the previous financial year.

Mr Keating said there were recent cases involving allegations of substance use and driving, which had led to tragedy.

"We will continue our program, I look forward to seeing it expand and I think it's producing a safer environment for everyone on Queensland roads," he said.

Despite recent criticism of 'sneaky' speed cameras, Mr Keating said police would continue to operate the program "as is" into the future.

"I do take point when people say speeding is not a contributor to road safety; 248 people died ... on Queensland roads last year," he said.

Mr Keating said he started every day at work by reading a summary report on the fatal traffic crashes across the state in the previous 24 hours.

"I can tell you, that speeding is the major contributor to the causes of fatal traffic crashes, often associated with other activity," he said.

During the festive period, police conducted 92,458 random breath tests for drink driving and 2038 roadside drug tests.
