In early September minor premiers Buffs ended a 22 year old drought to take victory in the Mount Isa AFL premiership. Buffs won a thriller over Lake Nash 58-56 in the decider 8-10 to 8-8.

On the same weekend, about 6000 people including Governor-General Peter Cosgrove were attending the 135th Birdsville Cup. There were hopes for North West horses but the cup went to Roma trainer Craig Smith with his rider Adrian Coome leading Fast Fella to victory.
It was grand final time in the Mount Isa hockey too with Pirates beating the Aces 2-0 in the women’s final and T-Birds outlasting the Pirates in sudden death in the men’s final.
In the winter touch finals, the men’s A-Grade final went to overtime and Lions held off the Redskins to win 6-5. In the women’s Pink Panthers beat Orioles A 11-1.
In women’s soccer Parkside defeated the minor premiership winners Isaroos 2-1 to win the grand final while the men’s side from Parkside made it a club premiership double. They beat Atlas 2-1 after extra time.
Dajarra celebrated the return of its rodeo after being forced to cancel in 2016 due to rain. This year’s event was part of the Cloncurry C150 birthday celebrations and attracted a big crowd.
Also in the C150 celebrations, Cloncurry Eagles took on minor premiers Normanton in an exhibition game. The home side was too good defeated the Stingers 54-4.
The final sporting event for Cloncurry’s C150 celebrations was the South32 Best of the West Rodeo. Tom Webster won the saddle bronc and Donovan Rutherford won the bull ride.
The rugby season returned in October with the Mount Isa Occupational Therapy Super Sevens. Six teams competed and a Fiji side beat Keas in the final.
The cricket season also opened in October. Competition started with a T20 tournament opener despite some rain interruptions. Western Bulls beat Townview on the Duckworth-Lewis Method, while Challengers could not haul in Black Stars. Panthers beat the Cavs on run rate.
In October Mount Isa Copper City Cycling Club farewelled a local cycling legend Brett Dennis with a special ride around town. Dennis, a former 1994 Commonwealth Games 100km team trail gold medallist, died tragically aged just 45.
Also in October jockey Lee Attard led the Ray Hermann-trained Holey Gadoley to victory in the 2017 Brodie Hardware Cloncurry Cup Open in hot conditions.
Mount Isa teenager Joshua Moren was the toast of the local fishing community after smashing the record for the biggest barra at the 19th Clancy Corporation Lake Moondarra Fishing Classic. Joshua was fishing with his dad when he landed 26.7kg monster beating the previous record of 26.17kg.
