As Rocky Horror Show lead Adam Rennie stood behind the curtain last Tuesday, moments before gracing Adelaide audiences with his version of Dr Frank-N-Furter, he was hoping the crowd would come along for the ride.

Just a day earlier, former lead Craig McLachlan stood down from the role amid indecent assault accusations and the fishnets were handed to Rennie, his understudy.

The roar that erupted from the Adelaide crowd when Rennie was announced as the "sweet transvestite" was enough to relax the 31-year-old and he hoped the Brisbane leg of the show's national tour on Friday would go just as smoothly.

"I honestly don't think I can put into words how that night felt," he said.

"It was overwhelming...to feel the support of everyone who was putting the show on and the full house that came...was a truly special moment for me."

The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts graduate said he was not expecting to ever get the chance share the "Frank of my imagination" given McLachlan's track record of never taking a show off.

"It is an understudy role, I really wasn't expecting...to get a chance to get in the full get-up," he said.

"That is the interesting thing about covering, you have to be ready to step on at any point in time but you are also aware you can do that full work to create a full person and maybe it will stay in your imagination and maybe no-one will ever see it."

Co-star Amanda Harrison, who plays Magenta, said the 24 hours from when Rennie was handed the role to when he stepped on stage were tough.

"He did his first tech run in front of 2000 people so it was a pretty special day," she said.

"It was quite stressful early last week as you can imagine so we all banded together and were supportive of one another and understanding of the situation."

Former Neighbours star McLachlan was accused of sexual assault, bullying and harassment last week after a number of female cast members from the 2014 Rocky Horror Show came forward in a joint Fairfax/ABC investigation.

Rennie spoke calmly of getting ready for the role at a preview screening of the show at Queensland's Performing Arts Centre on Thursday.

"On Monday afternoon I went home and spent the whole night going over the show in my imagination and had some people come over and run lines with me just so I felt comfortable," he said.

"The next day...I had people buzzing around me to make sure everything fit right.

"There were a few technical things that I needed to get some help with like furniture pieces and then very quickly it was the first opening night and I was there.

"I was as calm as I was I think because I had done the work and I felt so supported by everybody."

Richard O'Brien's Rocky Horror Show will play at QPAC from Friday through to February 11 before kicking off in Perth from February 17 and Melbourne from July 13.
