Keas saw off Cloncurry in a rugby thriller at the start of November. In a game in doubt right up to the final whistle, Keas just hung on to win 20-17 as their fine start to the Mount Isa Rugby Union season continues.

Mount Isa Mines worker Dean Saunders proved his strength taking out first place at a Mount Isa Strongman event called ‘static monsters’ at Stack City Fitness. Static means two events dead lift and log press and was one several Strongman events organised in 2017 by paramedic Scott Jones.
Mount Isa Race Club elected a new committee with president Dan Ballard staying on assisted by new treasurer businesswoman Norma-Jean Caldwell. Mr Ballard said the long term goal of the club was to increase capacity to comfortably cater for large race day audiences. He celebrated at the Melbourne Cup Day meet winning three from five races.
Alex Cleary was selected for the Queensland Under 23 softball team at the state softball championships. The 20-year-old Mount Isan will train until July 2018 for the Australian U23 at Redlands.
Former Queensland State of Origin star Billy Moore entertained as the guest speaker at a men’s health dinner in Cloncurry in November. Mr Moore told tales of his playing days in a night that raised $15,000 for charity Manup!
The Sandfire Bulls took a local side to the Australian Indigenous Soccer championships in Nowra, NSW in November. The team North Queensland Dragons had players from Mount Isa and Cairns. Two Isa players Regan Rankine and Jayden Dempsey were selected to represent Australia to play a Maori team in New Zealand in January.
The Mount Isa junior touch tournament held its grand finals in November with the emphasis on fun and support from parents.
Summer also brought the annual Sports for Bush Kids annual carnival. The carnival is a week of intensive sports coaching run by the Mount Isa School of the Air and the Isolated Children’s Parents Association which hosted 130 kids.
Blackstars had a convincing win over Panthers to win the Mount Isa T20 cricket premiership in December. Blackstars batted first and made 4/167. Panthers lost early wickets in the run chase and fell short 7/150 thanks to Cam Conlan taking 3/9.
Mount Isa’s Elle Goodall achieved her goal of competing in her first Ironman before her 30th birthday. She took part in the Busselton, WA Ironman in December though the swim leg was cancelled due to sharks.
The Cloncurry C150 celebrations ended the year with a bang and a Christmas rodeo at the Equestrian Centre. There was a special visitor in 17-year-old John Michael Elliot from Texas, the US 2017 Rookie Tie Down Champion.
