Fearnley will race in the capital for the last time at the Canberra International this weekend as he prepares to finish his 20-year track career at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in April.

The four-time Paralympian is gunning for a third consecutive Commonwealth Games medal in the 1500m T54 after taking gold in Delhi 2010 and silver at Glasgow 2014.

"I'll do everything to be on the Gold Coast but after that I'm done. I'll do a few New York Marathons and Chicago Marathons but no more track," Fearnley said.

"There'll be a couple of hundred Fearnley's up at the Gold Coast, I've got the chance to finish my racing career at home and if I finish that with a win that's a hell of a moment.

"I've had some pretty good moments in my life, some unbelievable moments, and I can see this one as a very attractive moment to track down.

"I've been coming to Canberra every summer for 22 years but this will be my last race down here. It should be a nice way to warm up and see where my arms are and where everyone else is at just three months from the Games."

Lappin has long been touted Fearnley's successor and the 37-year-old veteran tipped the young gun to get his number in front of a home crowd on Saturday.

"I'll back him for the win in the 1500m, he's an absolute star and definitely one to watch," Fearnley said.

"He'll be knocking it out for the Comm Games as well and pushing the pointy end, he has a big, big future in front of him.

"People should come out and have a look, it's a big bunch of guys developing and turning into the next best wheelchair racers in the world."

Angie Ballard has moved back to Canberra after 15 years in Sydney and is hungry to win at home, before turning her attention to defending gold in the 1500m on the Gold Coast.

"I knew I wanted to go to Tokyo again and that would be my sixth Olympic cycle, so I just felt like it was time for a change and reinvigorate where I was as an athlete and move back home," Ballard said.

"I love competing in Canberra because my mum and dad and brother come out and it's really strong competition."

Twenty-six international wheelchair athletes will compete in the capital including Australian star Madison De Rozario who will face Ballard in the 1500m at the Commonwealth Games.
