Crombie won gold on his world para-athletics championships debut after throwing 15.95m in the shot put to smash the F38 classification world record by 37cm at the London 2017 event.

The Canberran placed fifth in the javelin at the same event and his stellar season was capped after being named the people's sporting champion at the CBR Sport Awards in December.

Crombie didn't know he had cerebral palsy until he was 22 and began his para sports career in rowing, but after problems finding a classification, he moved to track and field where he has thrived.

The 31-year-old now wants to back up his London heroics when he competes at his first Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in April.

"I'd be lying if I said I wasn't going for gold, that's the aim and if I can increase the world record a little bit, that's the other goal," Crombie said.

"I've still got plenty of things to get right beforehand with state champs, international grand prix and nationals all coming up, so there's a long time to go before the final dance, but I'm enjoying the process."

Shot put is just one of just six para-athletics events at the Gold Coast games and Crombie said he's determined to do Australia proud and win in front of the home crowd.

"I know there's a lot of good athletes in the Australian team that would love to be in the position I'm in and to compete on home soil is huge," Crombie said.

"Just to even have an event in the Games is big honour and privilege, I don't want to waste the opportunity and am just looking to enjoy it and do a few people proud."

Crombie's hectic schedule allows for very little free time and things won't slow down after the Games, instead he'll change training tools and focus on javelin at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.

"Javelin isn't at the Comm Games but it's our event in Tokyo, so as soon we finish on the Gold Coast we'll drop the shot put and pick up the javelin and go hard for 2020," Crombie said.

"At the moment I hit the gym first thing in the morning then jump into a suit go to work and then throw at lunchtime or in the afternoon, before jumping back into a suit and finishing work around 9pm.

"I only usually get about five hours sleep each night and I also do weekly training with fire brigade who I'm on call with all week if there's fires."

Crombie will compete at the ACT state championships at the AIS in the able-bodied shot put on Friday and the F38 on Sunday.

Crombie works as a volunteer firefighter with the ACT Rural Fire Service at the Molonglo and said the brigade allows him to switch off from work and training.

"As it gets hotter in summer the call outs come pretty thick and fast but it's volunteer work, so you go to as many as you can, but I try to make time for it because it's something I really enjoy," Crombie said.

"I've been involved for five years and it keeps me sane, it's a great outlet because part of the problem with training and working in real estate is your mind never shuts off.

"The fire brigade helps to keep a bit more of a balanced life and checks my mind out to a certain degree, I can just focus on having a bit of fun with the great group of guys and girls out there."

Crombie praised the support of his partner and former Canberra Capitals star Carly Wilson, who will be cheering in the stands on the Gold Coast.

"To have someone that understands everything from a sporting side and a commitment side is a big load off, she knows how hard I work and is no stranger to that herself," Crombie said.

"She played in the top grade for almost 20 years so you can't get any more understanding than that and I'm very lucky to have her by my side, also my coach Hamish McDonald, who has been to more para games than I've had hot dinners."
