Admittedly very tired after only "a few hours of sleep," Federer said there was no reason he wouldn't try to do it all again in 12 months time.

"Yeah, I'd love to come back, I know I forgot to say that after the match. All I wanted to say (after the match) was a big thank you and that's it really, a lot of people to thank in a moment like this, but I hope I come back again next year."

Federer said he spent a "relaxing" night with his family and although admitting it would have been nice to sleep in, he said having to do media was a good thing because it meant he was a grand slam winner for a 20th time.

And while he did say it was difficult to split the 20 slams, Federer admitted there was something extra special about this one.

"This year seems more surreal, I can't believe I was able to defend my title after all these years, that I could do it again.

"Maybe this one is going to take longer to sink in, I'm not sure.

"They all in their own way feel special or feel different from one another.

"How did match point feel, how was the trophy ceremony, how was the speech ??? was it teary or was it not?

"All these things matter and one day when you look back on them, I have little bits and pieces of all the grand slams that I was able to win that make them special.

"All happened because of hard work and dedication and passion."

Federer presented his trophy outside government house at the edge of the Botanical Gardens, to a huge awaiting media contingent.

The Swiss champion smiled glowingly when asked what he thought about the vision of Rod Laver trying to take a photo of him on his iPhone after the match.

"Honestly, I didn't see it," he smiled.

"I've only seen a little clip. Was it a selfie? Was it a picture of him? In the moment itself I couldn't see a thing.

"Hearing about it, it sounds good, it sounds funny to me."

Moments earlier, Laver himself declared on radio that Federer was the greatest tennis player ever.

"For me, I think Roger Federer is certainly the greatest player that has come along," Laver said on SEN.

"Yes, we've got lots of great players - look at (Rafael) Nadal with a record that says 'I've just won 10 French Opens', and you can't sort of push that under the mat.

"But I think Roger plays his greatest tennis on the big occasions, on any surface.

"He's stood the test of time - that's probably the one thing that puts you in that category of the best ever. That's one of the things that he has done. He loves the game, and everything he does around his life is somewhere related to all the great (things he has done).

Federer said he will now spend some time with his family before deciding whether to play in Dubai, where he would have the chance of getting back the world No.1 ranking.
