Steve Connelly, director of Sport and Community Development at CPR Group said they would be presenting the workshop called “‘Committee Coaching” on behalf of Football Queensland and North West Queensland Soccer Zone but it was open to all sporting groups in the area.
“People are familiar with the term coaching but words like governance generally scare people off so we’re hoping to steer away from that particular word ,” Mr Connelly said.
But the session itself is very much about challenge the traditional mindset of volunteers in sports, recognising the world is changing and the rules of how we operate must change in that as well.”
Mr Connelly said the session would look at how to manage money, how to make more money and getting the right people to do the right jobs in a club.
“The underlying theme in all of this is we’ve got is that we’ve got an adage which is that we want volunteers to be happy,” he said.
“A happy volunteer is one who spends exactly the amount of time in their volunteer role from one week to the next that they want to spend and they spend all of that time doing exactly what they want to do.”

Mr Connelly said volunteers generally don’t experience either of those things.
“Most are overworked, doing multiple roles and the workload expected of incorporated not for profits is increasing and we don’t expect it to decrease any time soon.” he said.
“The workshop is really about optimising their time and helping people educate others The days of handshake agreements are gone.”
