The news comes a day after Fred Brophy’s Boxing Troupe announced their events calendar for 2018 in which Mount Isa Rodeo did not feature.
“The date is still open, I can fit it in, so it’s not a no yet,” Mr Brophy said.
“It’s 50/50 at the moment. I’m thinking about it.”
Mr Brophy said he had been inundated with calls from supporters who see the iconic tent as a mainstay during rodeo time.
“I’ve received a lot of phone calls from people showing their loyalty and support to me and my team,” he said.
Mr Brophy said he didn’t like the attitude of the Rodeo Committee over the changes to the Mardi Gras last year.
In 2017 Mr Brophy’s boxing tent was officially not part of the Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo and he held his matches behind the Isa Hotel in the central business district.
Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo Manager Natalie Flecker said they were still keen for Mr Brophy to attend but he had not spoken to them.
“It is a decision he made without speaking to us even once,” Ms Flecker said.
“We are definitely open to Mr Brophy returning and talking to us about finding a solution that works for everyone.”
Whatever happens to Mount Isa, Fred Brophy’s Boxing Tent will be back in Western Queensland in 2018 with an event planned at the Birdsville races on Friday 31 August – 1 September 2018.
