Coordinator and promoter Scott Jones said in the past they had hosted a push and pull event but this is the first competition in twenty years to feature all three powerlifting events.
“Push and pull features just the deadlift and the bench press, however this event, is a 3-lift competition which also has squats,” Mr Jones said.
“A couple of guys who compete here remember one held about 20 years ago so it’s been a long time between rounds.”
Competition is strong with 17 entrants registered already.
“You can register from now leading up to the day and also on the day,” Mr Jones said.
He said you shouldn’t be concerned if you don’t lift the heaviest weights during the event because the competition winner is based on the Wilks formula.
The Wilks formula compares the strength of powerlifters against their different body weights.
“It’s no different from a jockey, they weigh in before the race, so do powerlifters, it goes by how much you lift compared to your bodyweight,” Mr Jones said.
“We have female and male competitors. Sarah Pizzey took away four or five trophies last competition and she’ll be back again for this event.”
The event is at Stack City Fitness, above the Barkly Hotel.
