Another Sports Expo has been and gone and I enjoyed catching up with well over 40 organisations who had stalls at the Civic Centre last Saturday.

I caught up with most of them and I apologise to the handful I missed, it was a testament to the popularity of your stall with too many visitors there whenever I happened to walk past.
Organisers, Mount Isa City Council, gave the event a subtle name change this year, changing it from the Sports Expo to just a Sign On Expo.
It didn’t mean sports were not welcome – on the contrary, sporting clubs were there in droves – but it meant that other community groups and not-for-profits were also welcome to attend and groups like Apex and the Mount Isa Craft group were there to talk to the public and hopefully attract new members.
In this day and age where clubs struggle to attract members and volunteers, days like these are crucial to get themselves heard and understood.
The event certainly was popular with the public with a large and constant crowd through the doors from midday Saturday to the close of events at 3pm.
This marked a change from previous years when it was held on Sundays and I think the change worked as it suited people who may have been in town Saturday morning doing shopping or dropping kids off at training.
The time meant entire families could come along and check out all their favourite sports and other activities.
My congratulations to Mount Isa City Council for their splendid organisation of the event and to Cr Peta MacRae who put a lot of personal effort into in and who was an energetic MC on the day ably assisted by Deputy Mayor Phil Barwick.
Council also engaged CPR Group to help them with their sports survey which will feed into the Sports and Recreation Strategy.
The purpose of the strategy is to help guide Council and the broader community to make decisions about where best to invest time and resources in relation to sport and recreation programs, services and facilities over the next 10 years.
