Darwin man Dan Baschiera, author and humanitarian, will launch his novel titled On Leichhardt’s Path Kakadu 1845 at the Mount Isa City Library with a $5 entry fee.
German explorer Ludwig Leichhardt went on three famous expeditions around Australia in the 1840s, the first from Brisbane to the north coast near Darwin, the second a failed east to west exhibition, and the third, also east to west where he and his team disappeared without trace.
Mr Baschiera’s book touches on the expeditions and the subsequent search for him.
He said the Mount Isa launch of the book begins at 5.30pm Tuesday and will raise funds for reading supports at the Mount Isa Base Hospital children’s ward.
“Light refreshments will be served and a captivating look into the social geography of the times and the mystery Leichhardt left behind will be addressed,” Mr Baschiera said.
Mr Baschiera said the book was controversial because it interpreted Leichhardt’s experiences in a world of social distinctions.
“I have immersed myself over many years in the social history of the time because I’m looking for clues as to where and what happened to this most interesting explorer,” he said.
Mr Baschiera’s work has taken him throughout Australia and the world.
He is fluent in four languages, and also aids Doctors without Borders in Africa.
“Doctors without Border’s is an international humanitarian organisation known for its missions in war-torn regions,” Mr Baschiera said.
“I will be heading to Africa to assist next month.”
