The 2018 Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo Queen Quest entrant, Rebecca Hodshon organised the event and said a few people cancelled last minute but overall she was happy with the number of participants.
Each participant was assigned a number and given a card with the option to tick yes or no next to a person’s corresponding number.
Ms Hodshon said the idea was if you would like to get to know a particular person better then you would tick yes, if you didn’t feel any connection then you would tick no.
“The trick was the connection needed to be felt by both participants and if that happened then I would give the lady the gentleman’s phone number at the end of the evening,” Ms Hodshon said.
Participant, Shannon said her friend was quite adamant they should come on Saturday night, not only for fun but because it was for a good cause.
“I haven’t thought ‘Oh geez get me out of here’, yet,” she said.
“Everyone is quite friendly and enjoying themselves.”
Each participant was given five minutes to get to know the person seated in front of them.
“I turned the table and asked them about themselves, then let them speak for at least three of the minutes so I didn’t feel like I was repeating myself with the same conversation,” Shannon said.
Shannon said she was looking for someone to go four-wheel driving with but wasn’t too fussed if she didn’t find anyone.
“It’s all fun and I don’t feel any pressure to tick yes or no,” she said.
Participant Paul agreed with Shannon the event was a fun way to raise money for a good cause.
“At first I was cautious but I actually feel quite comfortable,” he said.
“It’s a refreshing way to meet new people because there are no distractions with mobile phones and surprisingly you can learn a lot about a person in five minutes.”
Paul said he had ticked yes on his form.
“Tonight I have met a few ladies who I’d like to meet up with for coffee or lunch again to see where this could end up.”
