Special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation is probing Jared Kushner's attempts to secure foreign financing for his real estate company during the presidential transition period, CNN has reported.

According to the news network, this is the first indication that Mueller's enquiry into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election is focusing beyond Kushner's alleged Russian contacts.
Kushner - President Donald Trump's son-in-law - was asked during recent interviews about his efforts to secure financing for an office building in New York that was facing financial difficulties, CNN reported, citing people familiar with the investigation.
CNN said the reason for Mueller's interest in the topic was not clear.
One week after Trump's election Kushner met the chairman and executives of Anbang Insurance, the Chinese group which owns the Waldorf Astoria in New York, according to the New York Times.
During the presidential transition period Kushner spoke to foreign contacts from over 15 countries, according to a statement he provided to Congressional investigators.
Kushner has denied accepting Russian funds to finance his business activities and has defended his contacts with Russian officials during and after the presidential campaign as "proper".
