The new police mascot PD Sarge was an initiative the Mount Isa Police and PCYC brainstormed to help deliver personal safety messages to children.
Sergeant Cath Purcell said the P D in his name is short for police dog.
“We applied for a grant through the Mount Isa City Council Local Community Grant iniative.
“Sarge’s job will be to teach children how to call 000 and to learn who to talk to in an emergency,” said Sgt Purcell.
“It’s important children know the correct way to call for help and the importance of knowing their parents’ phone numbers as well.”
Sarge will teach ‘the safety hand’ to young children to help them think about trusted people they can talk to if they feel unsafe.
“People on your safe hand might be your parents, your grandparents, your teacher, your doctor, or a police officer,” Sgt Purcell said.
“If the first person is unable to assist then they move to the next person.”
